To paraphrase the good folks on Strictly during these unusual times, my encouragement would be to keeeeeeeep marketing, if at all possible.
Now I know some people will say, well you would say that, you’re a marketing business. I get that. But I’m trying to be 100% objective here.
Over many years in marketing, I’ve seen marketing budgets very often cut at the first sign of difficulty. And it’s almost always the wrong thing to do because really effective, measurable marketing (together with strong sales activity) is what will get a business out of difficulty.
Marketing is also about building up momentum, and outstripping your competitors. If a business stops doing that for 3 or 6 months, it takes an awfully long time to get the same momentum and competitive advantage back to the previous level, if in fact you ever do.
I know some businesses have been hit so much that they really can’t continue marketing through this time. I completely understand that, and our heartfelt thoughts are with them. But if you possibly can, do, because your business will come out the other side of this all the stronger.
